Rublev Artists Oil Paint Flemish White (Series 5, 150ml – Code 811) is a historically grounded white oil paint formulated for painters who want a creamy, long-handling white that excels in pure highlights and refined modelling. Flemish White is composed primarily of lead sulfate, giving it a distinctive flowing brush feel that draws out clean, controlled strokes while maintaining body on the surface.
Historically, “Flemish white” has referred to different lead-based whites depending on the era. Nineteenth-century references—including Field’s Chromatography by Thomas Salter and earlier technical writing—associate the name with lead sulfate sold as “white precipitate of lead.” This formulation recreates that later tradition as a mixed-pigment white, combining the handling and covering qualities of lead compounds with improved stability in the extender component.
Flemish White is ground in linseed oil with no additives (no waxes, stearates, or fillers added to modify the paint). The pigment blend includes tribasic lead sulfate (PW2), basic lead carbonate (PW1), and talc (PW26). Talc is used in place of magnesium carbonate (magnesia) to reduce water-sensitivity while maintaining the intended working character of the paint.
