Rublev Colours Lead Alkyd Ground is a professional, semi-absorbent white ground designed for oil and alkyd painting, formulated to deliver strong adhesion, excellent leveling, and blister/crack resistance. Made with a high pigment load, it typically covers in two coats, creating a durable, bright foundation that helps your paint layers bond beautifully and behave predictably.
This alkyd-based ground is ideal for non-absorbent rigid supports like ACM (aluminium composite material) panels and copper, while also performing exceptionally well on solid wood, hardboard, and canvas mounted to rigid supports (and it can be used on stretched canvas when needed). It dries fast—often touch-dry within hours and typically dry enough to recoat in around 8 hours—making it a great choice for artists who want a reliable, workshop-friendly priming system.
Why artists choose it
-
High pigment concentration for excellent coverage and a brilliant white surface
-
Balanced blend of calcite, lead white, and rutile titanium dioxide for a tough, flexible film with controlled absorbency
-
No zinc oxide (zinc can contribute to cracking in oil grounds)
-
Smooth application by brush, palette knife, or foam roller (eggshell finish)
Use & application (quick guide)
Stir thoroughly. Apply a thin, even coat, remove excess, and allow to hard-dry before applying the next coat. For very smooth panels, additional coats can be used to reduce absorbency and increase refinement. Can be thinned sparingly with mineral spirits/OMS/turpentine if required.
Important safety note: This product contains lead and uses mineral spirits in the vehicle—use gloves, avoid skin contact and inhalation of vapours, keep away from children/pets, and follow all label safety directions.
