Rublev Colours Lead Alkyd Ground is a professional oil & alkyd primer made from a carefully balanced blend of calcite (calcium carbonate), lead white, and titanium white in a smooth, leveling alkyd binder. The result is a semi-absorbent, high-pigment ground that creates a tough, flexible foundation with excellent adhesion—ideal for artists who want a traditional-style oil ground feel with fast, practical drying (typically hard dry in around 8 hours, depending on conditions).
Designed especially for rigid, non-absorbent supports such as ACM (aluminium composite material) and copper panels, Lead Alkyd Ground also performs beautifully on wood panels, hardboard, and canvas mounted to a rigid support. Most surfaces reach strong coverage in two coats, while additional coats can be used to build a smoother, less absorbent finish for fine detail work.
Why artists choose it
-
High pigment load for strong opacity and coverage
-
Semi-absorbent surface with excellent “holdout” for oil & alkyd layers
-
Crack & blister resistant formula (with carefully selected whites)
-
Zinc oxide free (no zinc added)
-
Great leveling to minimise brush/knife marks
-
Suitable for ACM, copper, wood panel, hardboard, and rigid-mounted canvas
How to use (quick guide)
-
Stir very well before use.
-
Apply a thin, even coat with a bristle brush or foam roller (foam rollers give the smoothest finish on ACM).
-
Let dry hard dry, then apply at least one more coat.
-
Allow to cure thoroughly before painting.
Optional thinning: a small amount of mineral spirits/OMS/turpentine if needed—avoid over-diluting.
