Rublev Colours Crimson Ochre is a richly coloured, semi-transparent deep red earth watercolour with distinctive purplish-pink undertones and a refined, fine-grained feel. The pigment is a natural red iron oxide (hematite) sourced from quarries in the Lori province of northern Armenia, giving it that classic, historic “iron earth” character—dependable, harmonious in mixes, and beautifully nuanced in washes.
Formulated with a traditional gum arabic binder and no additives, Crimson Ochre behaves like a true single-pigment earth: strong in masstone, elegant when diluted, and especially useful for artists who love natural colour transitions. It offers moderate tinting strength, no staining, and moderate granulation/flocculation, making it ideal for layered glazing, textured washes, and lifting techniques without harsh edges.
This is an excellent choice for portrait work (warm shadows, cheeks, lips, and underpainting), landscapes (iron-rich soils, cliffs, outback reds, brick and terracotta), and urban sketching where you want depth and warmth without overpowering neighbouring colours. Because it’s a red ochre (iron oxide rather than hydrated iron oxide), it has a deeper, more mineral red presence—perfect for earthy palettes and classical colour mixing.
As with many minimally processed, stabiliser-free paints, some separation of pigment and binder may occur. Simply mix on your palette to restore a smooth working consistency.
