Rublev Italian Brown Ochre is a natural earth colour based on hydrated iron oxide, the principal colouring agent in ochres. This pigment is primarily goethite (α-FeOOH), occurring with natural mineral companions such as clay, chalk, and silica, which give it a grounded, earthy warmth. Unlike red ochres (iron oxide), ochres contain water in the mineral structure, which contributes to their classic, mellow character and dependable permanence.
Ground in linseed oil with no additives, Italian Brown Ochre offers a semi-transparent, earthy brown that is ideal for natural landscapes, architectural tones, and tonal underpainting. Its moderate tinting strength lets you build colour gradually, while its medium drying makes it practical for layered oil painting. Mixed with titanium white, it produces beautiful warm stone, khaki, and greige tints - perfect for skin underlayers, sunlit grounds, and quiet neutrals that do not look chalky.
